Since 27 September 2026, online stores selling goods to consumers in the EU must inform them about the legal guarantee with a harmonised, EU-wide notice. If the producer offers a durability guarantee of more than two years, the GARAN label is added.
This guide explains what the rules require, where the labels should appear in your store and how to set up both in Shopify without code.
This page summarises our understanding of the rules and is not legal advice. The binding texts are Directive (EU) 2024/825, Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1960 and the national implementing laws.
What is the harmonised legal guarantee notice?
Directive (EU) 2024/825 added a new duty to the Consumer Rights Directive: traders inform consumers about their legal guarantee of conformity in a harmonised format. Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1960 defines what this notice looks like: a fixed layout stating the minimum duration of two years and a QR code linking to the EU's Your Europe portal.
The notice exists in all 23 official EU languages. Layout, wording and QR code are prescribed, so the safest approach is to use the official EU artwork unchanged.
When do you also need the GARAN label?
The GARAN label is the harmonised label for the commercial guarantee of durability. It applies to goods for which the producer offers a durability guarantee of more than two years covering the entire good. The label shows the guarantee duration, the brand and the model.
In our understanding, guarantees offered by the trader or producer guarantees of two years or less are not covered. Without such a producer guarantee you only show the legal guarantee notice.
Where should the notice appear in your store?
The notice should be clearly visible before the consumer is bound by the contract. In Shopify the product page is the most important place, ideally close to the buy button, because express checkout buttons such as Shop Pay skip the cart. Showing it in the cart as well still makes sense.
Only Shopify Plus stores can extend the checkout itself. The European Commission's practical guidelines also recommend including the notice in the order confirmation.
Collapsed or fully visible? The Commission's practical guidelines show online examples in which the notice opens on click. The German law firm IT-Recht Kanzlei, however, considers a notice that only appears after expanding impermissible. The most cautious option is therefore the fully visible graphic. For the GARAN label, the regulation explicitly allows a nested, expandable display.
Step by step: add the labels to Shopify with Warranto
- Install Warranto for free from the Shopify App Store.
- Open the setup guide in the app dashboard. One click opens the theme editor and adds the “EU Warranty Labels” block to your product page template. Then click Save in the top right corner.
- Use the integration check in the dashboard to confirm the notice is live. It also detects themes with a slide-in cart.
- Optionally add the block for the cart page. For slide-in carts the app includes instructions with a short code snippet.
- If products carry a producer guarantee of more than two years, enter duration, brand and model (PRO). The GARAN label then appears automatically, optionally also per line in the cart. Rules cover entire brands or product types at once.
- The notice language automatically follows the language your customers see your store in. The free plan includes German and English, PRO all 23 official EU languages.
Frequently asked questions
Since when does the requirement apply?
The national rules on the harmonised legal guarantee notice apply since 27 September 2026.
Does this affect B2B-only stores?
The rules protect consumers. In our understanding, stores that sell exclusively to businesses are not affected.
Is a text link enough instead of the graphic?
The regulation prescribes the design and content of the notice. The safest approach is the official graphic directly on the page. An additional text link to the Your Europe portal is useful but does not replace the graphic.
Do digital products and gift cards need the notice?
The notice concerns the legal guarantee for the sale of goods. In Warranto you can exclude digital products, gift cards or entire product types with one setting.
In which language should the notice appear?
Sensibly in the language your customers see your store in. The EU provides the notice in all 23 official languages.
How much does Warranto cost?
The free plan shows the legal guarantee notice on all products in German and English, and 50 products can be configured individually. PRO costs $9.99 per month or $79 per year with a 7-day free trial. PRO adds the GARAN label, all 23 languages, unlimited configurable products and rules.
